Behaviour

Appetite

Feeding is a very important aspect of dog management, and can affect behaviour as well as health, so please ask for advice if you are having problems.

Always feed your dog after you have eaten, particularly if he shows any interest in your food. This will reinforce your superior rank. When feeding stay around to prevent possessive and protective behaviour. Make sure your dog has completely finished eating before you remove his bowl, as removing half eaten food can lead to guarding behaviour.

It is important that your dog accepts that any member of the family can approach him whilst he is eating. He should not growl of snap to protect his food.

If your dog shows an inclination to protect his food, bones or toys please seek help.
