Sarah is an experienced trainer and handler of sheepdogs, both in daily work and in trialling. For many years she shepherded large numbers of sheep on difficult terrain, where good working dogs were essential. She has bred many of her own dogs under the Heathgate prefix, and has been helping handlers to train their dogs for over 20 years. Many of her pupils have achieved success on the trial field. She has two daughters, Megan and Caitlin, both of whom work and compete with their own Heathgate Border Collies.
She has been judging sheepdog trials for several years, beginning locally with the East Anglian Sheepdog Society and progressing to open trials, and more recently travelling to the United States of America to judge in California.
She has won numerous open sheepdog trials with various dogs and first qualified to run in The English National Sheepdog Trials in 1998 with Mott. Mott qualified to run for England at the International Sheepdog Trials that year, and competed in the television series of One Man and His Dog. Since then Sarah has competed at the English National every year, with Mott and later with Bill. Bill was in the English Team at the 2003 International Sheepdog Trials. Both Mott and Bill qualified for the Bala World Trial in 2002. Her current dogs are Heathgate Speck, a daughter of Mott, Zak bred by Val Powell out of a sister of Bill, and Roy a young unregistered dog showing a lot of promise.
